The Sony FX5 Full-Frame Cinema Camera puts a fully stacked 16.6MP Exmor RS sensor, internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW recording, and Open Gate capture into a compact flattop body built for handheld and gimbal work. Part of the Sony Cinema Line, the FX5 gives independent filmmakers, documentary crews, and commercial shooters the color science, latitude, and on-set controls of a dedicated cinema camera in a rig that one operator can carry all day.
At the heart of the FX5 is a 35mm full-frame (35.9 x 24.0mm) stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor paired with the BIONZ XR2 processing engine and its integrated AI processing unit. The stacked design reads out quickly, which supports high-resolution, high-frame-rate recording, while 15+ stops of latitude in S-Log3 hold detail in bright skies and deep shadows within the same frame.
Three base ISO settings (800, 4000, and 12800) let you match the sensor to the light on set, from daylight exteriors to dim interiors. Dual Gain shooting reduces shadow noise for smooth, natural gradation that holds up in the grade. For crews building out a lineup of digital cinema cameras, the FX5 delivers S-Cinetone for a polished look straight out of camera, plus S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine for full grading control.
Internal X-OCN recording puts RAW footage straight on the card without an external recorder, and the LT, C1, and C2 codecs let you balance file size against image quality for each production. Open Gate uses the full 3:2 sensor area, giving you room to reframe for horizontal and vertical deliverables from a single take.
Dual card slots accept CFexpress Type A and SDXC memory cards and support relay, simultaneous, and separated recording, including main files and proxies on different cards. Three S-Log3 modes (Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, and Flexible ISO) cover everything from controlled sets to run-and-gun work, and you can load up to 16 user LUTs to monitor your intended look while you shoot.
AI-based subject recognition identifies human, animal, and bird eyes, while Real-time Tracking stays locked on a moving subject at shallow depth of field. AF transition speed and subject shift sensitivity are adjustable, and Focus Map shows depth of field visually on the monitor.
Optical 5-axis in-body stabilization works with gyro sensors to smooth handheld footage, and Dynamic Active mode adds electronic correction for walking shots. Stabilization metadata is embedded in each clip for further refinement in Sony's Catalyst software. The flattop body balances well on gimbals, and five accessory screw holes around the body, plus two tripod holes on the bottom, make rigging direct and simple.
On set, the BIG6 home screen keeps frame rate, ISO, shutter, iris, LUT, and white balance in one view. Front and rear tally lamps show recording status, a fan cooling system with three modes supports long recording sessions, and sealing at exterior joints adds dust and moisture resistance.

Yes. The FX5 records 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN directly to the card in LT, C1, or C2 codecs. It also outputs RAW over HDMI for productions that use an external recording workflow.
Both slots accept CFexpress Type A cards and SDXC cards (UHS-II and UHS-I). For X-OCN and high-frame-rate recording, CFexpress Type A cards with fast sustained write speeds are the practical choice.
The XLR handle adds two XLR/TRS inputs, a 3.5mm stereo mini jack, and up to 96kHz / 32-bit float audio recording across four channels. If you plan to run professional microphones straight into the camera, Samy's also carries the Sony FX5 with XLR Handle Unit. The body on its own includes a 3.5mm microphone input, a headphone output, and a Multi Interface Shoe with digital audio interface.
The included NP-SA100 battery provides approx. 105 minutes of actual recording and up to 170 minutes of continuous recording (CIPA standard, LCD monitor).
