Fujifilm instax mini Black Instant Film puts a black border around every shot instead of the familiar white one, and that single change makes a print read differently the moment it develops. Colors sit against a dark frame rather than a bright one, so highlights and saturated tones look deeper on the same image. This is standard Fujifilm instax mini color film in every other respect, which means it loads and shoots in any instax mini camera you already own.
Each pack holds 10 exposures on ISO 800 color film. The card measures 53 x 86 mm, about the footprint of a credit card, with an image area of 46 x 62 mm and the black frame filling the remaining border. The image area itself is glossy, so prints have the same finish as standard instax mini film.
ISO 800 is the reason instax works as well as it does in ordinary conditions. It gives the camera enough sensitivity to expose properly in daylight, indoors under flash, and at events where light is uneven. Fujifilm builds the emulsion with a refined grain structure, which holds sharpness and keeps skin tones natural rather than pushing them warm or magenta.
The black border is a design choice, not a different film stock. The chemistry, speed, and image area are identical to standard instax mini film, and the frame around the picture is simply black instead of white. Photographers reach for it when the white border competes with the image, when prints are going onto a dark album page or a gallery wall, or when a set of prints needs to look deliberate rather than casual.
It also mixes well. Shooting a mixed set of black border and standard white border film across an event gives you two visual treatments from one camera with no change in technique.
This film loads into every instax mini camera, and it works in instax mini smartphone printers as well. If your camera or printer takes instax mini film, it takes this pack. Packs load 10 at a time and the camera advances the dark slide automatically on the first shot, so there is nothing to set differently for the black border version.
One note on loading: keep the pack sealed until the camera is open and ready, and load in subdued light rather than direct sun. The film is light sensitive from the moment the foil comes off.

Keep unopened packs cool and dry, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources like a car dashboard. Refrigeration is fine for long term storage, but let a chilled pack return to room temperature before loading so condensation does not form. A padded pocket in one of our camera bags works well for packs you carry with you.
Plan on roughly one pack per five to eight guests for a guest book table, since people shoot more than they expect to. For a personal day out, two packs gives you 20 exposures and room to experiment.
