REVIEW: The Panasonic Lumix G9 - What More Could You Ask For?

January 15, 2018  |  by samys

A few weeks ago at Samy’s Camera, I was handed a slick black box with graphics with the new G9 from Panasonic Lumix inside. After unboxing and putting a battery and lens on the camera instantly I realized it was a perfect fit to my hand. It was not a cheap feeling lump of plastic; but, a solid body made from magnesium alloy and with a beautifully designed arrangement of buttons and controls.

[caption id="attachment_5276" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Panasonic[/caption]

It is also built to be splash, dust and freeze proof which I really do not want to test but I’ll take their word for itThe balance felt perfect in my hand with the Panasonic Leica 12-60mm stabilized lens which is equally solidly made, and beautiful glass at that.

I am the luckiest lad in the land! I have a bag with the G9 and also with that incredible camera my bag is filled with incredible Leica glass. As you have read in the past I am a Panasonic fanboy. All the camera brands I have tested for over a year at Samy’s Camera are so incredibly good…there is a camera for every personality out there. For my personality it is Panasonic with the lighter weight cameras as well as the ease of navigation and operation and all those fun features, last but not least superb image quality. I have owned Panasonic cameras over the years and recently the G85 and the FZ2500 “everything” bridge camera. With the FZ2500, which I have used for commercial jobs, I can go in with one camera with so many choices of focal lengths which makes it easy to move quickly and get those shots the client is looking for. Panasonic is a forward thinking company that listens and acts on photographer’s requests and needs. It seems Panasonic refines so many features with each model. The Panasonic Lumix photographer, whether amateur or professional has everything at hand on this new G9 camera to explore their creativity.

At this point of this revue I am at a place where I really do not know where to start….look at the list of incredible features. Too many for me to report on from personal experience. All I can say I am having the time of my life discovering all these bells and whistles, this is so much fun. Shouldn’t I be jaded after over 40 years as a pro? Not with this new G9, I am rediscovering photography!

Is this good enough for a pro?  I would suggest this system for a pro since there are so many creative options to produce extraordinary images of whatever comes your way.

For weddings, portraits, head shots, publicity photographs, photojournalism, sports and on and on. Micro 4/3rds for a pro? I will tell you that I am making 15 - 36 x 48” prints for an upcoming exhibition. I could take the images to 60” but my exhibition space will not be able to accommodate that size.

As I have done with previous reviews I will post images with information written below the image. Hopefully this will help you knowing the lens used  and the shutter, F stop and IS. This camera could be a perfect fit for you whatever you photograph or video. The old one picture is worth a thousand words syndrome is better along with the words. So let me try my best to post examples of different subjects and situations I have shot and some technical information that will help you make the decision to go with the G9 and if you can the best glass.

Just a quick synopsis here :

*20.3 megapixel CMOS sensor and a low pass filter (no anti-aliasing filter) which maximizes detail capture.

*This is probably one of the best features….the stabilization feature which means I can hand hold my camera at very slow shutter speeds down to 1/2 second or possibly 1 second without a tripod….whoo hoo. An example is the Indian Canyons waterfall photograph with the Leica 12 - 60mm lens, hand held a 1/6th of a second wide open and all sharp, no camera shake.

*Autofocus is lightning fast and accurate even under very low light.

*The High Resolution Mode at 80 megapixels is exceptional keeping in mind with the 8 shot pixel shift is takes up to about 1/2-8 seconds (the longest is 1 second maximum shutter at F/8 maximum) to capture the scene so a tripod or stable surface to place the camera is a must. Because of the 8 different shots subjects must be stationary but saying that I did shoot a subject, the Red Arrow Highway 62 Joshua Tree where the flags were waving and it is quite acceptable and not un-natural looking. You could use it for portraits (strong continuous light) but the subjects must hold still for about 2-3 seconds maybe less depending on the lighting. This feature is great for architecture, interiors, product/food photography, cars/motorcycles etc. !

Slo-Mo 180 FPS
The Slo Mo 180 FPS feature is quite useful for those Indie films….Slo Mo makes everything a bit more dramatic.
Time lapse

This is really a fun feature. Compressing a few minutes down to a few seconds.

6K mode

One can shoot a scene at 30 frames per second and pull out an 18 megapixel file from one of those frames.

This is great for fast moving subjects such as sports, wild life photography and even photojournalistic events, weddings, street photography where a scene changes quickly from one second to the next.

High speed continuous shooting.

This is nuts. 60 fps for 50 frames in raw using the electronic shutter or 12 fps in raw for 60 frames….wow! With AF-C 9 fps with the mechanical and 20 fps with the electronic shutter.

Not to mention focus stacking, HDR, custom function buttons, color profiles and filters and more.

I have to say again that I like to process my photographs before posting in my reviews instead of presenting a cold slab of raw files which is like not cooking the steak (sorry to my Vegan friends; undercooked veggies does not sound quite right).

Since I am mostly a still photographer who does shoot video let me share with you a 4K 24 fps video. I am very happy with the results since it was just a spontaneous video of a musician friend Ted Siegel of The Deltaz. I grabbed the camera, whacked on the external microphone onto the hotshot and plugged it in. I think the video quality is exceptional and the audio with the help of the external microphone is very good. Hand held at that. The other video options are listed with the specs.

This is a real winner in my book and will be my camera of choice for some time along with my G85 as my back up camera.

If you are on the fence about about crossing over to Micro 4/3rds, now is the time …it’s a different game now. Thank you Panasonic!
