Memory & Storage FAQs

What type of memory card is best for 4K video recording?

For 4K and high-resolution video, UHS-II SD cards or high-speed microSD cards with fast write speeds ensure smooth recording without dropped frames. (Is there a reason you didn’t suggest CF cards here?)

Should I choose an SSD or an HDD for photo and video storage?

SSDs offer faster performance and durability, making them ideal for active workflows and frequent file access. HDDs provide larger capacities at a lower cost, making them great for long-term storage and archiving.

How do I safely back up my photo and video files?

  • A dual-storage approach is recommended: use a high-speed memory card for active shooting and back up files to an external SSD or (you might also want to suggest redundant storage- 2 external hard drives each having the same files on them)  HDD for long-term security.

What Type of Storage Device Does a Digital Camera Use?

Nearly all digital cameras use removable storage like secure digital or SD memory cards for cameras. These small memory cards - some made especially for cameras - allow you to remove and replace the camera memory card quickly and easily so you can have plenty of room to take new photos and videos.

How is Data Stored on a Digital Camera?

The images on a camera are saved as a series of binary 1's and 0's on either a camera memory card or disk. This data can be transferred to a computer, an external hard drive for photos, or another camera storage device for long-term storage. When accessed for editing or viewing, the computer or camera converts the binary code into a viewable image of the photo or video you took.

What's the Difference Between SDHC and SDXC Cards?

SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) and SDXC (Secure Digital Extended Capacity) cards differ mainly in storage capacity. SDHC cards can store up to 32GB, while SDXC cards can store from 64GB up to 2TB.

How Much Camera Storage Space Do I Need?

The amount of storage you need depends on your shooting habits, the file size of your images, and whether you're shooting in RAW or JPEG. If you're shooting high-resolution photos or videos, you'll need more storage space.

Can I Use Multiple Memory Cards at Once?

Yes, some professional cameras have dual memory card slots that allow you to use two cards simultaneously. This allows for several useful capabilities including on-site backup, overflow, or file separation.

How Fast Should My Memory Card Be?

The speed of your memory card depends on your camera's capabilities and what you're shooting. Faster cards are essential for high-resolution video recording and rapid burst photo shooting.

Is There a Lifespan for Memory Cards?

Yes, unfortunately memory cards have a limited lifespan, which can be affected by how often they are used and the conditions they are kept in. Always have a backup to prevent data loss.
