It's a Lens Hood, reduces lense flare when shooting in the sunlight, it does that. Easily goes on & off with a 90 degree twist. You can flip it around and put it on your lense so the petals point towards your camera for storage in a bag. It does what it says it does. I had one for my other lense that was an off brand and it didn't stay on as well as this one.
