The Canon RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Lens covers an 8.3x zoom range in a lens that weighs 10.9 ounces, which is the practical argument for owning one. On an APS-C EOS R body it frames like a 28.8mm wide angle at one end and a 240mm telephoto at the other, so a single lens handles an interior, a group shot, a portrait, and a subject across a field without a change. For photographers who want one lens on the camera for a full day, this is the Canon RF mount answer.
The RF-S designation means the lens projects an image circle sized for APS-C sensors. Mounted on an APS-C EOS R body it works natively across the full frame. Mounted on a full frame EOS R body, the camera automatically switches to 1.6x crop mode and records the smaller area rather than vignetting.
Optically the lens uses 17 elements arranged in 13 groups, with an angle of view running from 74 degrees 20 minutes at the wide end to 10 degrees 25 minutes at 150mm. Minimum focus distance is 6.7 inches, which is close enough to fill the frame with detail work without carrying a dedicated macro lens.
Optical image stabilization in the lens provides up to 4.5 stops of correction on its own. On EOS R bodies with in body stabilization, Coordinated IS combines the two systems for up to 6.5 stops. That is the difference between needing a tripod indoors and shooting handheld at a shutter speed you can actually work with, and it matters most at the 150mm end where camera shake shows up first.
Stabilization helps video as well. Handheld walking shots and slow pans hold together far more cleanly with the system active, which is the practical reason hybrid shooters keep this lens on the camera.
A stepping motor drives autofocus, and stepping motors are quiet and smooth by design rather than fast and audible. For video that means focus racks that do not land on the audio track. Paired with Dual Pixel CMOS AF covering 100 percent of the APS-C sensor area, subject tracking stays locked as a subject moves across the frame rather than dropping when it leaves a central zone.
The lens accepts 55mm filters, measures 2.7 inches in diameter by 5 inches long, and weighs 10.9 ounces. That combination keeps an APS-C EOS R body balanced in one hand, which is the point of an APS-C system in the first place.
Travel photographers get the clearest benefit. One lens covering 28.8mm through 240mm equivalent means the camera bag holds a body and a spare battery instead of a bag full of glass, and there is no lens change on a dusty street or in the rain.

It is a variable aperture zoom, so the widest aperture narrows as you zoom in. Stabilization worth up to 4.5 stops on its own, or up to 6.5 with a stabilized body, buys back a great deal of that for static subjects. For moving subjects in dim light, a wide aperture prime remains the tool for the job.
Minimum focus distance is 6.7 inches, which handles flowers, food, product details, and texture work comfortably. Dedicated macro work at life size reproduction calls for a macro lens.
